National Trust – trip to Cherryburn

I am a National Trust member, and I love the freedom it gives me to visit beautiful places. I am trying to visit all the places round Northumberland and Tyne and Wear. As I live in Morpeth, the closest places are Cragside and Wallington. They are beautiful locations and well worth a trip.

Cherryburn was not on my radar untill I looked through the members book and saw a couple of places that I wanted to visist. Gibside was one and Cherryburn was the other.

My sister was visiting from Switzerland and I thought that Cherryburn would be a great day out, especially as we had never been and it was one of the National Trusts unknown places.

It was a wet day but we decided a bit of rain never hurt anyone . When we arrived the sun came out and it was perfect. The staff are so lovely and helpful .They welcomed us as if it was their own home and straight away I knew I was going to enjoy learning about the history of Thomas Bewicks birth place.

The staff are so helpful and welcome you as if it is your own home. I would reccomend listening to the audio in the print room . Mr John Grundy tells you a little bit about the history of Thomas Bewick.

Cherryburn is one of those places that you think ” I will pop and see what its like, but it probably wont take long to look round….. well, I promise you it will be a place that you will want to come back to again and again.

Flowers to fill your home

Living on a narrow boat is a life that my son has chosen and he has now made it part of his work life too. Briastudio is where Stuart can create the most beautiful space from home and travel around the canals of London and bring such colour and vitality to the boat life.

Over the past few months I have become a pink girl in its many forms. Mainly soft, slightly peachy pink. I love putting mood boards together so that I can stitch small little pockets of creative joy. I tend to spend a few days putting fabrics, lace, trimmings and buttons together and over the days I move things around and add detail .I have such fun in finding what makes me stop and just photograph and stitch. Instead of just thinking about what you want to do I have been freed to embrace the process and just stitch or stick or layer or photograph without too much effort. I sit , I stitch , I photograph. I know what works and what needs more attention. If I feel all fluttery , I know its right for me.

Creative day with the Girls

using a teal painted paper as foundation for creating little textile pieces

Sometimes it takes a little bit of effort to get friends together , but when it all comes together it is a joy. There are four of us who have been friends since our children were babies. 30 years later and we have reconnected and are planning to meet up for days of fun, food, chat and creativity. Lots of water has passed under the bridge and we have all taken different paths, but there is no doubting our shared love of family and food and creating.

The past few months have been a journey and I have found my creative spirit. I am loving taking the time to enjoy collecting and putting together fabrics, lace, trimmings, buttons, words, papers. I am always on the lookout for interesting items that can be used in my creations. Sometimes just putting a few bits together and taking photographs is enough to make me happy. I also love it when I can spend 30 minutes sitting quietly and hand stitching a little pocket of textile delight.

I am hoping that our creative juices are flowing and the joy and therapy of stitching continue and here is to our next get-together.

The Beauty of fabric

I have loved allowing myself to spend time indulging in my favourite hobby of creating and putting things together. I have been collecting a wonderful collection of fabrics over the many years of working in the textile industry. Now i am able to release them and with other products I am able to put them to better use.
